Proceeds from the sale or renewal of Florida's bight yellow "Choose Life" license plates help fund programs for pregnant women considering adoption. The plates, which originated in 1999, have raised over $3 million in to support adoption in Florida. Twenty dollars from every sale or renewal is distributed to the home county. Florida law limits the money to agencies that counsel parenting or adoption and do not counsel women about abortion. Up to 30 percent of the money provides education and training for counselors who work with (potential) birth mothers.
In Alachua County, five maternity homes, adoption agencies and pregnancy centers signed a contract to use $39,000 for the clothing, transportation, housing, utilities, food and medical care of women committed to placing their babies for adoption, writes Brittany Rajchel in a story for The Gainesville Sun.
Twenty-six states now offer "Choose Life" plates. For more information about the plates and to learn whether your state offers one, visit choose-life.org.
